The ballroom
The ballroom was built in 1911 for the 21st birthday party of the owners’ daughter.
It has retained its original splendour, from the massive fireplace topped with the family’s coat of arms to the oak panelled walls and the hand carved gargoyles in the vaulted ceilings.
It seats up to 150 for a splendid sit down meal. We provide 5ft round tables and red banqueting chairs. Adorned with flowers and candles, there is arguably no finer place to celebrate a wedding, special occasion or corporate get-together. A sense of history emanates from the stone walls and it is easy to imagine that this room has always been dedicated to gatherings of true significance.
Standing proud above the ballroom is a minstrels gallery, accessed by two atmospheric stone staircases, which wind their way upwards past large stone windows.
The drawing room
The drawing room is one the most gracious rooms in the house. With its triple aspect view, the light pours in from all sides. The heavy drapes of green complemented with swags and tails add a sense of grandeur to the room, as does the elaborate fireplace of marble and stucco, topped with an original miniature oil.
This a very comfortable area with seating for over 30 people in its elegant armchairs and sofas. The interior designer has created an atmosphere which blends new and old. Many of the armchairs have been acquired from the Savoy hotel where they adorned the ballroom and public areas. The stunning chandelier also came to Achnagairn directly from the Savoy hotel in London.
The reception hall
This magnificent wood panelled room, with its two massive fireplaces at each end, harks back to an era of true elegance. Through its ornate French window, guests can step out onto the patio leading to the front lawn and formal gardens.
The room is a favourite for large gatherings. For corporate parties it is the perfect place to host initial drinks, while many brides choose it as the place to tie the knot.
It connects with the Drawing Room through an almost hidden door, allowing guests to circulate freely.
The dining room
This elegant room seats about 50 people, and tends to be used for most meals by those staying in the house. With its hugely impressive stone fireplace and antlers on the wall, the dining room works beautifully for smaller formal meals, with the ballroom being used for larger numbers.
Kitchens
The house has two kitchens - one for private use and one for caterers.
The "family" kitchen is fully equipped for a group’s stay at the house, and has two large solid oak tables as the centrepiece of the room. Many guests enjoy the informality of the family kitchen to take light meals or grab a cup of tea. The kitchen has two dishwashers, a double oven and large hob. It has a modern design, with oak and stainless steel cabinets.
The catering kitchen
The catering kitchen contains everything necessary for our panel of outside caterers to prepare a meal for up to 150 people.
Please note - as this is all professional equipment, it can only be used by those on our catering panel.
The bar
Just beyond the ballroom is the Achnagairn bar.
In the medium term we will apply for a licence to operate a bar at the house, but in the meantime we can offer the following two options:
- the catering company you choose from our panel can run the bar for you. Please consult the individual companies for costs.
- You are free to bring in your own alcohol, but there is a corkage / serving charge levied by the caterer. Once again, please consult the catrering company in question, as charges vary.
The courtyard
The house has a fully enclosed courtyard, which is an ideal place to have a drink or snack, weather permitting.
The bridal suite
The bridal suite is a truly breathtaking room, offering all that a bride and groom could possibly desire. The huge 4 poster bed sets the tone of opulence and the framed prints depicting romantic moments have been specially chosen to set the scene. Light pours in from the triple aspect windows and the views, whether over the formal garden or the rolling hills a re spectacular. One particular indulgence offered within the room itself is a travertine-tiled whirlpool bath perfect for the newly married couple to relax in after the excitement of the festivities! An impressive stone fireplace, surrounded by elegant armchairs (which once adorned the Savoy Hotel in London) gives the bridal couple their own luxurious space to contemplate the new phase of their lives together.
The sense of opulence and the stunning views continue in the ensuite bathroom, with its dramatic combination of black and pink marble. Its vast mirrors, unusually shaped walk-in shower and equestrian statue add to the effect.
